We love community living! Below are a list of some of the events that we do, or have done in the past. We find that community life is very much it’s own living, breathing organism, and that at times its better to focus on events and outreach, and other times it’s better to focus on rest. One of our main goals is to create a schedule of events that is sustainable for long term community living. That may mean that sometimes we drop events for a season, or try new things. We may not currently be doing the event you’re looking for, but as always, if you’re looking to connect you can drop us a line at restorela@gmail.com.
A short list of current and past events at Restore LA. This is by no means all inclusive.
PRAYER – all the time
The prayer room is located at the back of one of our houses. We encourage prayer anytime, anywhere. To cement prayer as a foundation of our community, each member is asked to commit to one of our three weekly prayer meetings.
KINGDOM CELEBRATION — currently on hold – coming back soon!
The whole community gets together for this one, not just those who live together in Restore LA, but our friends and family who are walking along side us. This is a special occasion where Restore LA members get to express the love for Christ that they’ve been cultivating in private — through work, through prayer, through service to others — as an extravagant outpouring of love. Here we discover that all who trust in Him are one. Here we worship our Savior, share communion, and ponder His Word together.
SALON – usually 3rd Friday’s of the month
A salon is a gathering centered on stimulating discussion, and we in Restore L.A. love to discuss! Salons include at least a minimal dinner and the content can vary — from movie nights to seminars on social issues, from an amateur salsa class to an evening of ethnic cooking. These get-togethers happen as Restore L.A. members initiate ideas, so be creative and suggest something!
COMMUNITY DINNER — currently on hold – coming back soon. We are trying a mix of Salon nights and community dinners.
Someone in the community cooks dinner for everyone. And by everyone, I mean EV-ER-Y-ONE. The neighborhood kids are welcome as are any friends. Anywhere from 4 to 40 people may come!
FAMILY DINNER – Sunday and Wednesday nights – 6pm
This dinner is for community members only. We have a rotating schedule of cooks. Here, most importantly, we spend time together. Usually a time of personal sharing or group discussion of a book we’re reading follows dinner. Once a month we set aside as “Practicals Discussion Week” where members meet with their housemates only and discuss chores, food sharing, and finances.
TUTORING — on hold right now as a formal scheduled event
We offer tutoring for the neighborhood kids on an “as needed” basis. The schools in our neighborhood tend to be ranked near the bottom of the LA school district, so this is one of the first neighborhood initiatives we took.
BOXING LESSONS – Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays
We connect with some of the neighborhood youth and a local sports center to help provide boxing lessons three times a week.
PROJECT DAYS* — whenever
You’ll see these on the calendar: a day to build a garden, or partnering in a Big Sunday event to clean up the litter on 6th St., or maybe we need to clean the back of the house. Blech.
COMMUNITY TRIPS — whenever
Every once in a while, it’s good to get away as a community and explore together. Trips to the beach, weekends at Joshua Tree, some structured and focused on building our vision together, some spontaneous and carefree.
A WORD ABOUT CHURCH: We come from a variety of Christian traditions: Presbyterian, Catholic, Charismatic, Baptist, Vineyard, Christian & Missionary Alliance, you name it, we got it. A large group of Restore L.A. folks now attend New City Church of L.A., but we encourage diversity and participate in a variety of Christian communities.
We walk in partnership with several communities of like heart, including The Pasadena Int’l House of Prayer, NightLight, New City, and Inner Change. We also consider The Simple Way in Philadelphia, PA and the 24/7 Prayer movement out of the UK influential to our formation.
